LatestThis week's delta — 2026-10-19

Window reviewed: 2026-10-12 → 2026-10-19, plus two items missed earlier: Claude Dashboards (Oct 8) and the dbt Summit announcements (Sep 15–18). Overall: moderate week. Power BI's October Feature Summary was light (a native Gantt chart is the headline). Excel Copilot picked up data-prep features, and Python 3.15 shipped with UTF-8 as the default encoding. The bigger story for the classroom: AI-built dashboards are now showing up outside BI tools, and every major platform is racing to catalog and govern metadata across tools.

Highest-signal items

  1. Power BI October 2026 Feature Summary (~Oct 16): light, but useful. The Report Authoring skill (part of skills for Fabric) can now build reports with custom visuals (GA). It can bind fields, format, and suggest an AppSource visual when core visuals can't do the job. There's a new core Gantt chart visual (Preview; turn it on in Desktop under Options > Preview features). It supports milestones, % complete, extra task columns, and a zoom axis. The list slicer gets a dropdown mode with "Show selected first" (Preview). These are now GA: plot-area background color, auto-expanding hierarchy axis with field-parameter support, and personal bookmarks that keep column widths. Surge protection now sees semantic-model CU usage continuously during long background operations. Connector news from the same week: the Databricks ADBC driver for Power BI is GA and is the default for new connections. Per the Power BI Weekly #379 summary, the Power BI service moves from ODBC to ADBC through Q1 2027. Amazon Redshift connectors are moving to the Redshift ODBC 2.x driver.
Sources: Power BI October 2026 Feature Summary; Databricks October 2026 (Oct 15); Power BI Weekly #379 (Oct 16, secondary roundup).

  2. Excel Copilot moves into data prep ("Beyond Analysis," Excel blog, Oct 12). Five pieces, each at a different stage. Get data describes the data you want and its shape in plain language, instead of building Power Query by hand (GA from mid-October, in Excel for the web). Clean data flags inconsistent values ("USA"/"US"/"United States"), wrong data types, formatting problems, and duplicates, explains them, and recommends fixes (began rolling out to GA). Skill builder turns your instructions or examples into a reusable Copilot skill (GA rollout began in October). Skill recorder learns a skill by watching you do the task (Insiders by end of October). Interactive canvas builds the auto-refreshing report. Status conflict: the blog says canvas is "currently available in Insiders," while Message Center MC1485411 (updated Oct 6) still lists a worldwide GA rollout from mid to end of October. Check your own tenant before you plan a lab around it.

  3. Python 3.15.0 is out (Oct 9). The big one for analytics classes is UTF-8 as the default encoding (PEP 686). open() and many CSV workflows no longer depend on the Windows locale code page, which removes a classic cause of "it works on my Mac but breaks in the Windows lab." Also new: explicit lazy imports (PEP 810), built-in frozendict (PEP 814) and sentinel (PEP 661), unpacking in comprehensions (PEP 798), the Tachyon sampling profiler, better error messages, and a faster experimental JIT. On the library side, pandas is at 3.0.6 (needs Python ≥3.11), and Polars has no 2.0.x patch yet (GitHub's latest is still py-2.0.0).
Sources: Python 3.15.0 release (2026-10-09); What's new in Python 3.15; PyPI pandas; Polars releases.

  4. AI dashboards outside BI tools: Claude Dashboards (beta, Oct 8; missed last week). Anthropic's Claude now builds live dashboards from a connected warehouse (Redshift, BigQuery, ClickHouse, Databricks, Snowflake) or another connector such as Salesforce. Each chart shows the SQL behind it and when it last refreshed. It's available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, and it's off by default on Enterprise. When a dashboard is shared, each viewer's own connection runs the queries. Dashboards can be sent on to Hex, Sigma, Omni, Grafana, and others, with Tableau, Looker, and Databricks Genie "coming soon." The New Stack notes that OpenAI's Data agent (a ChatGPT Work plugin) shipped the same idea about a month earlier. Power BI practitioners are already connecting Claude to Power BI semantic models through the Fabric IQ MCP server. One example is Reza Rad's walkthrough, which shows DAX running under the user's own permissions with row- and object-level security still enforced.

  5. Databricks, Oct 12–19. The agentic code converter is GA for SQL (Oct 15). It's powered by Genie Code, converts T-SQL, Snowflake, Redshift, Oracle, BigQuery, and Teradata SQL into Databricks SQL, and validates and fixes its own output. Also this week:

    • Governed tag propagation through lineage (Beta, Oct 12) carries tags automatically into CTAS outputs, views, and MERGE targets.
    • Lakeflow pipeline parameters are GA (Oct 12).
    • Knowledge Assistant and Supervisor Agent are now legacy (Oct 12). Databricks points no-code builders to Genie Agents and code-first builders to the Agent Bricks CLI.
    • External engines can query UC views via the Unity REST API (GA, Oct 13).
    • Consumer access to Unity Gateway model services is GA (Oct 15), with admin budgets and rate limits.
    • Gemini 4 Argon is available on Unity Gateway (Oct 13), and MySQL integrated CDC is GA (Oct 15).
    • Saving an unchanged job no longer adds rows to the jobs system tables (Oct 19).

    Source: Databricks October 2026.

  6. Snowflake, Oct 12–16: metadata reaches across tools. Horizon Context (Preview, Oct 12) connects Horizon Catalog to 18 sources, including Power BI, Tableau, dbt, Databricks, and BigQuery. It traces column-level lineage across platforms, lets stewards edit descriptions and tags on Power BI and Tableau dashboards, and adds an APPLY COMMENT privilege so stewards can curate descriptions without ownership. Also:

    • Cortex Agent SDK for Python and TypeScript (Public Preview, Oct 13).
    • CoWork document generation is GA (Oct 14): PDF, .docx, PowerPoint, or HTML from an analysis.
    • Snowflake Postgres data mirroring is GA (Oct 15).
    • Apache Iceberg v3 upgrades are GA (Oct 16).
    • Cortex AI Gateway expanded to Azure, GCP, and AWS New Zealand (Oct 16).

    Source: Snowflake all release notes.

  7. Google BigQuery, Oct 12–16. GoogleSQL column aliases let you reuse a SELECT alias later in the same SELECT list or in WHERE (GA but opt-in, Oct 15). Google explicitly frames this as easing migrations from Snowflake and Teradata syntax. Conversational analytics now supports conversations across multiple projects or a dataset, and agents can be published to Gemini Enterprise (both GA, Oct 14). An agent's answer, with visuals, tables, and citations, can be exported to PDF or CSV (GA, Oct 15). AI.AGG (semantic aggregation over unstructured text) is GA (Oct 13). TimesFM 3.0 multivariate AI.FORECAST arrived Oct 7 (Preview).
    Source: BigQuery release notes.

  8. Missed earlier: dbt v2 is GA (dbt Summit, Sep 15–18). dbt now runs on one Rust-based engine (grown out of Fusion). It ships in two distributions: dbt, which is free with optional paid features, and dbt-oss, which contains only the Apache-2.0 components. dbt Core is renamed "dbt v1" and stays Apache 2.0. Adapters that are GA on v2: BigQuery, Databricks, DuckDB, Redshift, and Snowflake. Fabric, Postgres, and Athena are "coming soon." Also announced: Lake Compute (private beta; a DuckDB-based engine over Iceberg), dbt Wizard, dbt Charts, and Fivetran Context Layer (limited public preview).
Sources: dbt Labs — Everything we announced at dbt Summit; Fivetran product update, October 2026.

Teaching implications (this week)

  • Python labs: don't switch lab images to 3.15 mid-term. Check first that pandas, Polars, and your plotting stack install cleanly. Still teach explicit encoding="utf-8" in open()/read_csv(), because students will meet older Pythons and files that aren't UTF-8 at work.
  • dbt course version choice: If your labs run dbt on Postgres or Fabric, stay on dbt v1 (Core) this term, since those v2 adapters aren't out yet. DuckDB-based labs can try v2 now. Explain the v1/v2 naming early so students aren't confused by job postings and documentation.
  • "Show me the query" is now a product feature. Claude Dashboards, BigQuery agent exports with citations, and Excel canvas all put AI-built charts in front of stakeholders. Make query and metric auditing a graded skill: students trace one number back to its SQL or DAX and check the grain, the filters, and the time window.
  • Excel's "clean data" and Power Query belong together. Have students run Copilot's clean-data suggestions, then reproduce the accepted fixes as Power Query steps so the cleaning is repeatable and reviewable.
  • SQL dialect lesson: BigQuery's new alias reuse in WHERE (opt-in) joins Snowflake and Databricks in allowing patterns that PostgreSQL and T-SQL reject. It's a quick way to show why "it ran in one warehouse" isn't proof of portable SQL.
  • Governance unit: Snowflake Horizon Context (lineage into Power BI and Tableau) and Databricks tag propagation make cross-tool lineage and classification concrete. Ask students: if a column is tagged PII upstream, does the dashboard know?
  • Power BI Gantt (Preview) is good for project-management analytics assignments without AppSource visuals. Preview features stay off by default in lab images.
  • Utah lab guidance unchanged: Power BI primary, Tableau secondary. No new regional signal this week.

Little / no material change

  • Tableau: Desktop is still 2026.2.3 (Sep 22). Tableau posted that 2026.3 is "coming soon" (LinkedIn, Oct 5), with no date or download yet. Tableau Studio GA is still not confirmed: Tableau's Oct 13 social post still pointed people to the keynote preview rather than announcing GA, so the "end of October" target is the latest word.
  • Fabric: Learn's what's-new page has no October rows yet. On Runtime, Learn now advises using "the most recent GA runtime... currently Runtime 2.0," but the same page still says new workspaces default to Runtime 1.3.
  • Polars: no 2.0.x patch release yet. Pinning advice is unchanged.
  • Skills demand: A new October snapshot from Apiva reports SQL 66.4%, Python 47.3%, Tableau 39.5%, and Power BI 29.8% across 526 fully read US data-analyst postings, and says only 7.6% of 2,054 postings were open to entry level. We could not open the report page (it's behind a browser check), so these figures come from a search summary only. Treat them as unverified until confirmed.

Teaching nugget (this week)

"Show me the query" audit (30 min). Give students one AI-generated dashboard and the SQL behind each chart. Any tool works: Claude Dashboards, an Excel canvas, a Power BI Copilot page, or a screenshot you prepare. Plant one subtle error, such as a COUNT(*) that should be COUNT(DISTINCT customer_id), a missing date filter, or a join that double-counts. Students (1) name each chart's grain, (2) find the planted error and rewrite the query, and (3) write a two-sentence note to a manager explaining why the number changed. Grade on the explanation as much as the fix. It works in any SQL course and doubles as an AI-literacy assessment.

Industry pattern to name in class: BI vendors, cloud warehouses, and notebooks are shipping MCP / data agents so copilots query governed semantic models — not random CSVs. FabCon (agentic Power BI, Fabric IQ/Core MCP GA), Tableau's Dreamforce Knowledge layer, and Microsoft joining Apache Ossie all reinforce that pattern — and the next step is apps built on semantic models, not just chat. October adds more evidence: Tableau Knowledge GA, Snowflake Semantic Studio GA, and Databricks metric view window measures GA mean every major vendor now treats the semantic layer as the AI contract. Teach governance (RLS, sensitivity labels, verified metrics) beside the AI demo. TDWI’s Sep framing: the hard problems are which metric, which source, when to certify — not just “chat with data.”

Framed for a general BA/DA program a professor could adapt; Utah / Wasatch Front employer lens noted where relevant.

Core student stack (semester 1–2)

Layer Primary Secondary / awareness Notes
Spreadsheet Excel (incl. Power Query; Python in Excel where licensed) Google Sheets Copilot change-history now GA; Python skill still Insiders
Query SQL (PostgreSQL or SQL Server / Fabric warehouse for labs) BigQuery / Snowflake intro Window functions + CTEs required; note counter_diff / time_bucket as cloud dialect extras
Scripting Python (pandas 3.x; optional Polars) R (stats electives) Clean → analyze → export to BI; Polars 2.0 GA (Oct 6): pin a version per term and teach explicit sorting; Python 3.15 (Oct 9) makes UTF-8 the default encoding, but don't move lab images mid-term
BI / viz Power BI (+ Fabric concepts) Tableau See Utah note below; PBIR is now the default report format; browser DirectQuery modeling helps Mac users; Tableau Desktop Free Edition works for local-only Tableau labs
Notebooks Jupyter / VS Code / Fabric notebooks Colab Reproducibility + Git basics
Versioning Git + GitHub/GitLab — Core, not elective: PBIP is GA and Fabric branch workspaces / compare-and-commit are GA

Utah / St. George / Wasatch Front BI lab recommendation

Based on prior employer-demand scan (2026-09-14); no strong new public flip found week of 2026-10-19 (individual Wasatch Front / St. George BI postings often list both tools — anecdotal):

  • Primary lab tool: Power BI (~60–70% of relevant market signal).
  • Secondary: Tableau (~20–25%).
  • Awareness: Domo (appears in some regional stacks).
  • St. George local sample is thin and mixed — use Wasatch Front as the broader hiring pool when advising students.
  • Curriculum implication: Power BI + DAX + basic Fabric/OneLake vocabulary first; offer Tableau modules or a comparison lab so graduates are bilingual.
  • Note (Oct 2026): Fabric Apps / Apps in Power BI are slated for preview on Pro and PPU licenses, so programs without Fabric capacity may soon demo app-building too.

Advanced / elective stack

  • Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse, Warehouse, Data Factory, Real-Time Intelligence) — teach concepts even if labs stay in Desktop + Service; point students at Fabric CI/CD overview for DevOps electives.
  • Snowflake or Databricks — one cloud analytics platform exposure; agents/Genie/Cortex as demos.
  • dbt concepts (transform-as-code) — dbt job in Fabric Data Factory is now GA (Sep 2026), with Lakehouse support in preview. dbt v2 (Rust engine) is GA (Sep 2026), and dbt Core is now called "dbt v1." Use v1 for Postgres/Fabric labs until those v2 adapters ship; DuckDB, Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, and Redshift are GA on v2.
  • Semantic modeling — Power BI semantic models / Tableau Semantics + Tableau Knowledge (GA Sep 30) / Snowflake Semantic Views + Semantic Studio (GA Sep 30) / Databricks metric views (window measures GA Oct 6) as first-class topics (agents consume these). Microsoft previewed OneLake semantic views at FabCon (sneak peek only). Mention Apache Ossie (incubating) as the emerging open interchange format.

Skills roadmap (what to teach, in order)

Evidence base: 365 Data Science 2026 posting study (Indeed USA sample; SQL 52.9%, Excel among MS Office mentions 50.5%, Python 31.2%, Power BI 29%, Tableau 26.2%) plus ongoing platform changes above. No abrupt US skill-mix flip verified week of 2026-10-19. (An October Apiva snapshot reportedly shows SQL 66.4%, Python 47.3%, Tableau 39.5%, and Power BI 29.8% in 526 US postings, with only 7.6% of 2,054 postings open to entry level. Unverified: the report page was blocked, so treat the numbers as provisional.) New global snapshot: Skillenai (90 days to Oct 11, 2026): 3,727 DA postings, SQL 58.1%, Python 42.3%, Tableau 26.9%, Power BI 26.2%, dbt 10.7%, data governance 9.9% (crawled global index; directional). Newer directional evidence: AI Analyst Lab (Sep 25, 2026) — of 340 US data analyst postings (one-day snapshot, Aug 28), 23.8% asked for any modern AI skill vs 91.2% for SQL/BI/pipelines and 47.6% for statistics/forecasting/experiments.

Must-have (every DA/BA graduate)

  1. SQL — joins, CTEs, window functions, data validation.
  2. Excel — cleaning, PivotTables, Power Query; charts that don't lie; Copilot change-history literacy where licensed.
  3. One BI tool deeply (Power BI recommended for Utah lens) — relationships, measures, publish/share, RLS basics.
  4. Data storytelling & stakeholder communication — insights → decision, not chart dumping.
  5. AI literacy for analysts — prompt → verify → cite; know when the model hallucinated a join or metric; understand agentic workflows need governed semantics.
  1. Python for analytics — pandas by default; Polars 2.x (GA Oct 6) as an option, with the streaming-default/row-order caveat and stricter casts.
  2. Statistics literacy — distributions, confidence, A/B basics, “so what?” for managers.
  3. Data modeling — star schemas, grain, slowly changing dimensions at a conceptual level.
  4. Ethics / privacy — PII, bias in metrics, sensitivity labels guiding AI agents (Fabric/Purview narrative).

Differentiating (capstone / electives)

  1. Fabric / lakehouse mental model; Direct Lake vs Import; Runtime 2.0 awareness.
  2. BI-as-code (PBIP, TMDL, CI/CD) — PBIP is GA and PBIR is the default (Sep 2026); consider moving the basics into the core BI course.
  3. Warehouse agents (Fabric Data Agent, Tableau Agent, Databricks Genie, Snowflake Cortex Agents) with evaluation rubrics.
  4. Light cloud (Azure/AWS/GCP) and API / MCP literacy.

Student learning tips (shareable)

  • Portfolio > course list: one end-to-end project (raw → SQL/Python → semantic model → dashboard → short memo).
  • Practice explaining a wrong AI answer — employers want judgment.
  • Learn both Power BI and Tableau at awareness level; go deep on one.
  • Treat certifications as optional proof, not substitutes for projects.
  • For collaborative Excel work: ask “what changed?” before trusting a shared forecast model.
  • AI is more often “preferred” than “required” in analyst postings — lead your résumé with SQL/BI evidence and show AI as a verified accelerator.
  • Never trust implicit row order: if “top 10” or “first row” matters, sort explicitly (SQL ORDER BY, Polars sort/maintain_order).
  • When an AI tool hands you a chart, open the query behind it. Claude Dashboards, BigQuery agents, and Copilot increasingly show it, and checking grain and filters is the skill employers can't automate.

Python

  • pandas remains the default teaching library for BA programs (current release 3.0.6, requires Python ≥3.11).
  • Python 3.15.0 (2026-10-09): UTF-8 default encoding (PEP 686); explicit lazy imports (PEP 810); frozendict (PEP 814) and sentinel (PEP 661) built-ins; unpacking in comprehensions (PEP 798); Tachyon sampling profiler; faster experimental JIT. Course advice: keep the current term's interpreter; verify pandas/Polars/plotting installs before moving spring images; keep teaching explicit encoding=.
    Sources: Python 3.15.0; What's new in 3.15.
  • Polars 2.0 GA (2026-10-06): polars 2.0.0 is the PyPI default (RC1 Sep 2, RC2 Sep 20). Lazy collect() defaults to the streaming engine (no row-order guarantee for joins/group_by/unpivot; use maintain_order or sort); out-of-core spill on by default (~80% RAM, 64 GB budget; not yet joins/group-bys); expanded SQL (window frames, QUALIFY, ROLLUP/CUBE, NTILE); Map dtype; stricter casts (str.to_date() instead of casting strings); cut/qcut deprecated for bin_*; melt/with_row_count/profile() removed. Course advice: pin polars==1.44.2 mid-term or move to >=2,<3 with the upgrade guide. No 2.0.x patch as of 2026-10-19.
Sources: Release of Polars 2.0; Version 2.0 upgrade guide; PyPI.
  • Fabric Runtime 2.0 GA (Aug 2026): Spark 4.1, Delta Lake 4.2, Python 3.13 — Learn still documents as not the default yet as of 2026-10-19 (new workspaces still default to Runtime 1.3, although Learn now recommends "the most recent GA runtime... currently Runtime 2.0" for production) even though the planned flip date (late September 2026) has passed; Runtime 1.3 is now labeled EOSA. Validate before labs; pin Environments if needed.
Sources: Runtime 2.0; Spark runtime overview.

Tableau

  • 2026.2 highlights (feature line unchanged): Tableau Agent in Dashboards (Beta/Pilot); Hosted Tableau MCP; Composable Data Sources; Semantic Search (Pilot); Tableau Next Guided Setup & auto semantic model (Beta); Drive Time Area maps; SVG export; Pulse point-in-time metrics.

  • Dreamforce (Sep 2026): Tableau Studio, Proactive Intelligence, Tableau Knowledge, Data Apps — GA targeted by end of October per TechTarget. Tableau Knowledge is GA (Sep 30) on Tableau Cloud+ / Tableau+ (Tableau Help); Studio GA not yet confirmed. Desktop still 2026.2.3 as of 2026-10-19 per search of the releases page; Tableau posted "Tableau 2026.3 is coming soon" (Oct 5) with no date. Studio GA still unconfirmed as of 2026-10-19.
  • Tableau Desktop Free Edition: free Windows/Mac Desktop with unlimited rows and most connectors, but it can't publish to Tableau Cloud/Server or share packaged workbooks (Tableau's Free Edition license supplement is dated March 2026). Handy for local-only student labs; Public Edition remains the portfolio path.

Curriculum nuggets bank (reuse anytime)

  1. Verify-the-bot lab (45 min): Same business question in Excel Copilot, Power BI Copilot, and handwritten SQL — students score accuracy and explain mismatches.
  2. Grain detective: Give a messy fact table; students define grain before writing any measure.
  3. PBIP field trip: Export/save a tiny report as PBIP; open in VS Code; identify report vs model folders.
  4. Metric contract: Write a one-page definition (owner, grain, filters, refresh) before building the visual.
  5. Utah employer bilingual: Primary deliverable in Power BI; 1-week Tableau remix of the same dataset.
  6. Change-history audit: Shared sales forecast workbook — students use Copilot change history to summarize teammate + AI edits, then restore one broken formula and document the cause.
  7. Agent-in-the-channel (elective): Demo Genie Slack chart reply (or Tableau MCP) → require students to reproduce the number in SQL before accepting the insight.
  8. Governed MCP / Fabric IQ: Pair Genie One MCP or Fabric IQ–grounded Copilot Chat with a wrong-metric trap question; students must name the semantic object (measure/table) that should have constrained the answer.
  9. Exact or close enough?: DISTINCTCOUNT vs APPROXIMATEDISTINCTCOUNT on a high-cardinality column; students quantify the gap and name one decision where each is acceptable.
  10. Metric passport (elective): Define one metric (e.g., churn) as a Power BI measure, then sketch it as an Apache Ossie / Snowflake Semantic View definition; discuss what translates cleanly and what doesn't.
  11. Row order is not a contract: Polars 2.0 lazy left join with vs without maintain_order, then SQL with vs without ORDER BY; students state the rule and one stakeholder harm.
  12. Canvas critique: Generate an Excel canvas (or any AI-built report) from a sales workbook; students audit one metric definition, one chart choice, and one missing caveat before the report is shared.
  13. Show me the query (NEW): AI-built dashboard plus its SQL with one planted error (wrong COUNT, missing date filter, double-counting join); students name the grain, fix the query, and explain the change to a manager.
  14. Encoding detective (NEW): Save a CSV with accented names in Windows-1252, then read it with and without encoding= on Python 3.14 and 3.15 (UTF-8 default). Students explain the error or mojibake and write the one-line fix.
